Preston pensioners isolated by cuts in bus services

“Under the Conservatives, Lancashire has seen fit to cut support for many bus services over the last four years, something that the Liberal Democrat Group on the county has always opposed” says County Councillor Bill Winlow.  This situation is particularly difficult in Lea town and the orbital bus service to Cottam and Ingol on Sundays has also been stopped making access to the hospital particularly difficult for those without cars. We now hear that this is a national phenomenon and that more than 340,000 people over 75 in Britain have been left “trapped in their own homes” because of cuts to bus local routes rhe WRVS has warned. A poll carried out by the voluntary organisation has found that one in seven over-75s has seen public transport in their area reduced amid cuts to council budgets. (The Daily Telegraph, 25/03/13). “We must find ways to proved community bus services for our elderly residents” says Bill.  “Large sums of money have been pumped into Highways by the Tories, but there has been little thought for how elderly citizens get around once they cease to drive their own cars”.
