Today’s LGIU Daily News reports that councils in England face a 10% cut in funding from central Government as part of the Spending Review for 2015-16. Sources say that Eric Pickles, the Communities and Local Government Secretary, has accepted in principle that the £21bn budget for local government could be reduced by this amount. Senior Whitehall officials said that Mr Pickles was still negotiating the details, which could include a transfer of cash from the NHS budget for social care. If the figure is correct, local councils will once again have to take one of the largest cuts to funding. The Local Government Association said last month that this would put a squeeze on children’s centres, museums, sports centres, road maintenance and street lighting. “This is not unexpected, but makes unpalatable reading. Yet again local council services will be hit by central government” says County Councillor Bill Winlow
