Growth and Infrastructure Bill could stimulate house building

by professorbillwinlow on 27 February, 2013

Today sees the Growth and Infrastructure Bill enter its Report Stage in the House of Lords. It is off concern that the Bill is still tinkering around with the planning system and not focusing on the big barriers that our economy faces, like access to housing finance to build and to buy. The Local Government Association LGA is working with Peers across the political divide to seek the removal of the housing borrowing cap which is currently imposed on local councils. This would not only deliver 60,000 more homes over the next five years, but it would also boost the UK economy by 0.6 per cent, without any adverse reaction from the financial markets. ” This will be a good thing if it happens says” Bill Winlow, “as long as there is local strategic control of housing developments and their associated highways infrastructure such as schools, surgeries, pharmacies, shops, play areas and green space”.
